Next Generation Lithium Fire Protection

The POM AVD™ Lithium-Ion Fire Spray is designed for the modern risks of lithium-ion battery fires. This compact 500ml fire suppressant deploys the patented Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion (AVD™) technology to safely suppress fires from devices like smartphones, laptops, power tools, and other rechargeable electronics.

Manufactured in the USA in an ISO 9001:2015 certified facility to ensure consistent quality and dependable performance. Engineered for high-risk fire scenarios, each unit is produced with precision to deliver reliable suppression when it counts.

Unlike traditional extinguishers, AVD™ works by encapsulating the battery cells — forming a protective, heat-resistant barrier similar to fire-rated drywall. This action rapidly cools the battery, helps prevent reignition, and actively works to deter thermal runaway, one of the most dangerous characteristics of lithium fires.

Designed for real-world use in homes, garages, and workspaces, the unit delivers a controlled 10-foot spray range with approximately 10 seconds of discharge time — giving you the ability to respond quickly while maintaining a safe distance. Its compact, easy-to-store form factor makes it an ideal addition to areas where lithium-powered devices are charged or stored.

The AVD™ formula uses Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion technology, a mineral-based fire suppression agent made from vermiculite suspended in water. Tested in lithium-ion battery fire applications, AVD™ helps cool the fire source, isolate fuel, reduce thermal propagation, and create an oxygen-blocking barrier.

Safe, targeted, and engineered for modern hazards, the POM AVD™ Fire Defense Unit is a critical tool for protecting your home and the devices you rely on every day.

Lithium Fires Are Different

Phones, laptops, e-bikes, power tools, and energy storage devices all rely on lithium-ion batteries. When these batteries fail, they do not behave like ordinary household fires.

Lithium-ion battery fires can generate intense heat, release flammable gases, spread from cell to cell, and reignite even after the visible flames appear to be out. That is why effective lithium battery fire control requires more than surface-level flame suppression — it requires a solution designed to address the underlying reaction.

The problem

Thermal Runaway

When a lithium-ion battery cell is damaged, overheated, overcharged, crushed, or short-circuited, it can enter a self-sustaining chain reaction called thermal runaway. As heat builds inside the cell, internal components begin to break down, creating more heat, gas, and pressure.

This reaction can quickly spread to nearby cells, making the fire difficult to control and increasing the risk of re-ignition after the initial flames are suppressed.

What happens during thermal runaway:

  • Heat builds inside the battery cell
  • Flammable gases may be released
  • Adjacent cells can ignite
  • The reaction can continue even after flames are reduced
  • Re-ignition can occur unexpectedly
Surface Cooling Is Not Enough

Why Standard Methods Fall Short

Water and many standard fire suppression methods may help cool the outside of the battery or knock down visible flames. However, lithium-ion battery fires can continue internally because the reaction is happening inside the cell structure.

That means a fire may appear controlled while heat and instability remain trapped inside the battery. Without addressing propagation, oxygen exposure, and heat transfer, the risk of flare-up or re-ignition can remain.

Traditional methods often:

  • Cool the surface of the battery
  • Reduce visible flames
  • Do not fully isolate the fuel source
  • May not stop cell-to-cell propagation
  • Can leave re-ignition risk behind
The Solution

AVD® Technology

Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion, or AVD™, is a mineral-based suppression technology developed specifically for lithium-ion battery fire risks. It is made from naturally occurring vermiculite suspended in water and is applied as a fine mist containing vermiculite platelets.

Unlike traditional agents that primarily focus on knocking down flames, AVD™ is designed to help cool the fire source, isolate the battery cell, and create a protective barrier that helps interrupt the fire’s ability to spread.

HOW IT WORKS

It Helps Stop the Reaction

When applied, AVD™ disperses fine water droplets containing vermiculite particles onto the burning battery cells. The water helps cool the fire source, while the vermiculite particles begin to build a protective barrier as the water evaporates.

As the barrier forms, the vermiculite platelets overlap and bind together, creating a non-flammable film over the surface. This barrier helps isolate the fuel source, reduce heat transfer, and limit oxygen exposure — three critical factors in controlling lithium-ion battery fire behavior.

This process helps:

  • Vermiculite particles coat the battery cells
  • Water content cools the fire source and nearby cells
  • A heat-resistant mineral film forms over the surface
  • The barrier helps block oxygen exposure
  • Thermal propagation is reduced
  • The battery is stabilized as the reaction is brought under control
